MN Rural Library Sustainability Project: Four Selected to Attend ALA
Four library staff from Greater Minnesota public libraries have been selected to attend the American
Library Association’s Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. in June. (We were able to fund three participant trips initially, and learned that the Gates Foundation would support funding a fourth!)
The grant recipients are:
Debby Bocnuk, Babbitt Public Library (Arrowhead Library System);
Christine Beyerl, Redwood Falls Library (Plum Creek Library System);
Shaw Simonsen, Barnesville Public Library of the Lake Agassiz Regional Library; and
Becky Walpole, Park Rapids Public Library of the Kitchigami Regional Library.
This trip is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of the Rural Library Sustainability
Project. The four Minnesota representatives will participate in a special one-day Rural Library
Sustainability Forum, which will bring together over 150 rural librarians from around the county to discuss
challenges, strategies and opportunities for the future of public libraries in rural communities. In addition,
they will attend other sessions and events at the ALA Annual Conference, attended by 18,000 librarians
and other library community members.
The four ALA Rural Forum participants were selected from 39 applicants based on their written responses. The selection team faced a difficult challenge of selecting among many, qualified candidates, and the team congratulates the applicants from the Rural Library Sustainability workshops for their thoughtful applications.
