Tim was the opening key note speaker at the 2008 MLA Conference. He was sponsored by the MN multitype library system directors and was a very popular speaker. As the creator of “Library Thing” (which was one of the 23 Things on a Stick), Tim was able to speak not only of the creation/growth of LibraryThing, but also about the tremendous impact social networking, especially in the area of tagging and content creation, can have on library catalogs.

This is taken from inside the NLLN Office so you can see that we have “ring side” seat for the Highway 10 construction going on at one of the busiest intersections in town. In addition to this work, the train depot on the other side of the street is also being renovated and, of course, we have 30-40 trains a day rumbling past. Thank goodness for triple pane plate glass. That helps keep the noise down even if it doesn’t stop the building from shaking.

Construction is almost done — we’ll be glad when the highway is open fully, but it has been an interesting summer!

Water pipe break in NLLN Office

What a summer — not only do we have a lot of construction going on outside as Highway 10 is redesigned and the railroad depot is renovated and the trains move through all day long, but we also had a water pipe break in the ceiling. Fortunately the ceiling tiles and Deb Keena’s quick response prevented us from having much damage. It did give us a chance, however, to sort through some stacks of paper and to get our carpet cleaned!

Minnesota Multitype Library System Directors did 2 sessions on “23 Things on a Stick: A Library Learning 2.0 Project” at the MEMO Midwinter Conference. It was very popular and got a lot people launched! Ann Walker Smalley, project lead, did a great job of presenting this material to an eager audience.

Gay did a great session on Collection Development in the Electronic Age. Libraries are still about providing resources and Gay had a lot to offer on how the electronic tools aid in creating quality collections.

Here are 4 of the NLLN women attending MEMO Midwinter. It was a great conference and we all learned a lot, had a chance to talk with vendors, networked with our colleagues, and ate well!
